Serve and Return
This is part of a series of videos to support Reo-a-Waha [oral language] at Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School. Serve and return to about backwards and forwards turn taking in conversation. Talking is a lot like tennis. The more you do it the better you get! Back and forward turns conversations build the brain for communication and learning in general. Experts tell us it’s not the amount of word we hear that matters it’s about the amount of turns we get to go back and forward. Remember – talking to children is really important!

This is part of a series of videos to support Reo-a-Waha [oral language] at Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School. Here are some of the important things our tamariki should be able to say when they start school. Saying hello and introducing yourself Saying thank you and how to respond Asking for help – where is the toilet, getting a drink, tying my shoe lace, opening things. Full name, address, Mum and Dad’s name and a phone number.
Talking in Full Sentences
This is part of a series of videos to support Reo-a-Waha [oral language] at Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School. Learning to talk in full sentences and ask great questions really helps kids to write great sentences. We can all help by supporting this at home too. Our tamariki do this in lots of different ways at school. Learning how to use Accountable Talk is just one way as you will see in this video.
Using our Home Languages to Learn
This is part of a series of videos to support Reo-a-Waha [oral language] at Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School. Did you know that it is easier for children to learn English when they have a strong home language? Being bilingual or even multilingual really is a taonga (that means ‘treasure’). It helps our tamariki to make sense of the world, it connects them with their culture and experts believe that it can make learning everything easier. At Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, we welcome and encourage the use of your home language every day!
